It is of different types:
- Primary amenorrhoea is defined as the absence of menses at age of 15 years in the presence or absence of normal growth and secondary sexual characteristics. It is is usually the result of abnormal chromosomes or genes. (link to facts)
- Secondary amenorrhoea is the absence of discontinuation of the regular menstrual cycle which occurs at an earlier age than normal menopause
- Polymenorrhea is variation in normal menstrual cycle which may effect fertility during reproductive age and may indicate a malignancy at times
Genetic counselling helps in identifying the causes of these by evaluating personal and medical history and suggesting appropriate tests
